WWE signs first women wrestler from the Arab world

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has signed its first female performer from the Arab world, making her the first Arab woman from the Middle East to have the opportunity to train to become a WWE Superstar.

Female athletes are finally getting the credit they deserve. The world is more open to that, and in terms of how the region will react to it, I‘m hoping it’s going to be very positive,” said Bseiso.

The talent pool for the tryouts comprised 40 men and women from the Middle East and India with diverse backgrounds in sports and athletics, including power lifters, rugby and football players, amateur wrestlers, martial artists and fitness experts.

While a woman exercising in public is rare in the Arab world and the local entertainment industry often relegates them to docile roles, big companies such as Nike have stepped up advertising geared towards female athletes.

Speaking to Reuters in the WWE’s Dubai office, Bseiso said she made sure to tell her parents about her colourful career choice in person.

“It is an honour to be the first-ever woman from the Middle East to sign with WWE,” Bseiso said. “Working with WWE is an incredible opportunity. I have visited the Performance Center and attended the Mae Young Classic. I have personally witnessed the power of WWE and the passion of WWE fans. I look forward to starting on my path to becoming a WWE Superstar.”
