Woman seeks divorce after husband stops her from playing PUBG

A woman in United Arab Emirates (UAE) is seeking a divorce from her husband after the latter reportedly disallowed her from playing online video game PUBG.

The woman, whose identity was not revealed by the authorities, justified her claim by saying that the ‘ban’ was depriving her of her right to choose her entertainment as “she derived comfort and pleasure” from the game.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) is an online, multiplayer game which is played by millions around the world.

The game’s popularity has not been without controversy and activists voice their concerns regarding the game being addictive and violent.

Captain Wafa Khalil Al Hosani, Ajman Police’s Social Centre Director told media that it was one of the most bizarre cases that had ever come to police regarding married couples.

The woman, an Arab in her 20s, told the police that she had not activated the chat option which could expose her to strangers, therefore, her activity was “well within the limits”.

She said she played the game only with her friends and relatives and that her husband was afraid that she could fall addicted for it and be negligent in her household duties and those towards the family.

However, the man said that he didn’t want to suppress her freedom, but rather, he only wanted “to keep the family together”.

“I didn’t expect that it would escalate to the point that my wife would ask for divorce”, he reportedly told the police.

Captain Hosani told the media that they had tried their best to ensure the couple resolved their differences and that the situation doesn’t escalate to divorce.
