The Queen’s Gambit is an American period drama, based on Walter Tevis’s novel by the same name. The series is created by Scott Frank and Allan Scott for netflix.
The story is about an orphaned girl named Beth Harmon, who is a chess prodigy. It revolves around her rise on becoming the world’s greatest chess player while dealing with her emotional problems and drug and alcohol dependency.
The Queen’s Gambit was released on October 23, 2020 on Netflix worldwide. After four weeks of viewing, it has become Netflix’s most watched scripted limited series.
The show has been admired by millions because of great cinematography; each frame of the film was designed exceptionally. Anya Taylor Joy’s performance has been exceptionally praised by the audience.
The series has also gained positive response from chess community.
Here are some of the factors why the show was very well received by the audience:
Racial Prejudice
The beautiful friendship between Jolene and Harmon has not only broken a racial indifference but also highlighted the fact a friend is always there when you need them. The bond between the two was beautifully showcased.
Financial Prejudice
Mr Shaibel (a Janitor) was shown training and fashioning a world champion. Mr. Shaibel played by Bill Camp, from his expressions to every second of the frame he got was perfection to the viewer’s eyes.
Religious prejudice
Beth Harmon was hesitant to communicate Christian ideas against her conscience even though it might have been beneficial to her career.
Sexual prejudice
Lastly proving that age and gender doesn’t matter to achieve what you are good at. Gender doesn’t define potential and success!
The Queen’s Gambit deserves every applause it gets! From the commendable performances to each specifically designed frame and how detailed it was, from great cinematography and character detailing, the team did it!
So, all the praise the show is getting, is very well deserved. And, if you haven’t watched the show, It’s high time you should!
