We know Bollywood, we obviously know Hollywood but do we know what is Lollywood? if yes then great for those who don’t lets scan through it. The Pakistani film industry is referred to as Lollywood.
The word “Lollywood” is a portmanteau of “Lahore” and “”Hollywood,” coined in 1989 by Glamour magazine gossip columnist Saleem Nasir, and is usually used comparatively with respect to other industries in South Asian cinema, such as Tollywood and Bollywood. Abdur Rashid Kardar (b:1904–d:1989), aka A.R. Kardar, was an actor and film director/film producer. He is credited as establishing the film industry in the Bhati Gate locality of Lahore.
Historically based in Lahore and on the rise, Lollywood is the term for the far smaller Urdu-language film industry; the number of films produced in Pakistan each year is dwarfed by the output of its neighbor. The Pakistani cinema went through a dip during Corvid but well to be fair the entire entertainment industry specially cinemas around the globe suffered during the pandemic. Now new movies are releasing back to back and we are really hopeful with our filmmakers and hoping the industry to gain its strength back.
