Top color trends from the spring/summer 2020 runways

The Spring/Summer 2020 season, which just wrapped this week in Paris, was an explosion of richly saturated colors—an antidote, if you will, to Fall/Winter 2019’s moody palette—and the experts over at Pantone accurately predicted some of the season’s most stand-out hues. These shades range from Grape Compote (a mellow purple) to Flame Scarlet (which looks just like it sounds). The overarching theme? “A sense of ease” and “elements of humor, modernity, and entertainment,” according to the Color Institute.

1. FLAME SCARLET
According to Pantone, this super-bright red symbolizes “confidence and determination,” which is appropriate, considering its appearance on sharp suiting and show-stopping gowns.

2. SAFFRON
Named after the spice of the same color, this particular shade of yellow is a touch more golden than mustard, but still universally chic, as evidenced by iterations of it on cinched dresses and covered in micro dots.

3. CLASSIC BLUE
“Vast as the open sky” is how Pantone described this shade of semi-dark shade of blue—arguably the most sartorial versatile of all 12 colors.

4. BISCAY GREEN
It’s all in the name: This minty green hue, named after the bay in Spain, is ultra-covetable on leather trenches, chiffon gowns, and sequined body-con numbers.

5. CHIVE
Representing a “healthy and restorative harmony,” this dark green is sleek, polished, and a bit utilitarian.

6. FADED DENIM
Exactly like a pair of trusty blue jeans, this shade represents comfort and ease, especially when seen on a buttery leather trench coat or a draped dress.
