Today marks the 17th death anniversary of Legend Noor Jahan

It was today, 17 years from now that the voice of the region left us in tears, marking a day to mourn and remember a lifetime. The legendary singer Noor Jehan died on 23rd December, 2000, a name incomparable in the music industry till date.

Born on 21st September, 1926, Noor Jahan (real name – Allah Wasai) began her career in the media industry through her classical music training and was later also involved into acting, thus marking a name into being a versatile personality. She started her career as a singer, actress and director (the first female director) with film ‘Chann Wey’ in 1951. Her last film was ‘Ghalib’ (1961).

Since she was five years old, Allah Wasai started her training in classical singing with Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, followed by Punjabi musician Ghulam Ahmed Chishti.

Malika-e-Tarrannum Noor Jehan sang many song in her queenly voice including the ever famous ‘Chandni Raatein’. She received Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (The Pride of Performance) in 1966 for her contribution to the entertainment industry.

Her other famous songs/ ghazals include the likes of “Mujh So Pehli Si Muhabbat’, ‘Kyun Log Muhabbat’, ‘Dil Da Jani’, ‘Meri Zindagi Hai Naghma’, “Tu Jo Mere Hamesha Kol’, ‘Mundeya Dupatta Chad Mera’ and many more.
