Ridley Scott is certainly not happy with young people at the moment and he’s blaming them for The Last Duel flopping at the box office. The film, starring Jodie Comer, Matt Damon and Adam Driver and Ben Affleck, is a historical drama that dives into the story of a knight who challenges his friend to a judicial duel after his wife claims the friend physically abused her.

Unfortunately, The Last Duel did not make it well on the box office. It collapsed with less than $30 million pulled in with a budget of $100 million. This was in direct contrast to what most critics were saying, along with those who actually turned out to see it. Speaking about the dud on the Marc Maron podcast WTF, Ridley Scott theorized that the reason for the Last Duel flopping badly was because young people are too distracted by cellphones and social media to have to learn something new.

The reason why people might not be going to see could be down to things that aren’t related to an entire generation. Some people are still navigating how they feel post-pandemic and whether they want to sit in a theatre with loads of people for hours.

There have also been some absolute blockbuster films released in recent weeks and that might be taking away audiences from The Last Duel. While the audience wrap-up says: “If you don’t mind its somewhat repetitive story structure, The Last Duel is an exciting, well-acted period drama that leaves you with plenty to think about.”
