Pakistan to host 2025 Champions Trophy, announces ICC

Pakistan will host the Men’s Champions Trophy in 2025 by the International Cricket Council (ICC), announced on Tuesday.

This will be the first major global cricket tournament  in Pakistan since 1996, when it hosted the Men’s Cricket World Championship alongside India and Sri Lanka. The final was held in Lahore and Sri Lanka won the title.

In response to this announcement, Pakistan’s Cricket Commission President Ramiz Raja said it is a matter of great pride and joy for Pakistan to host a great ICC tournament.

The ICC Champions Trophy was also scheduled to be played in Pakistan in 2009 but it was moved to England due to security reasons. Eleven regular members and three associate members have been selected to host two ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups, four ICC Men’s T20 World Cups and two men’s ICC  Champions Trophy events. The United States and Namibia will host the ICC World Championships for the first time. Meanwhile, Australia, Bangladesh, England, Ireland, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Scotland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe have already hosted major events and will repeat this for the next 10 years. The host was selected through a  bidding process overseen by a subcommittee of the Board of Directors chaired by Martin Snedden along with Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Skelitt. The ICC Board accepted the Commission’s recommendations and the Commission conducted a thorough review of each proposal with ICC management. A similar process to identify the organizers of the next cycle of ICC Women’s and U19 tournaments will take place early next year.
