Paatal Lok in legal trouble: Notice sent to Anushka Sharma for ‘Casteist Slur’ on Nepali Character!

Indian actress and an exective producer of the Amazon Prime series Paatal Lol, Anushka Sharma has been served with a legal notice for containing casteist slur.

On Monday, as per the media reports, producer Anushka Sharma and the OTT platform Amazon received a notice from the Punjab and Haryana High Court on a petition saying the web series Paatal Lok had defamed the Sikh community. The notice of motion was issued to the Union of India and 15 other respondents by the bench of Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi.

The legal notice says that the content in episode three of the series that has upset the community. The complaint petitioner-advocate Gurdeepinder Singh Dhillon said, “The respondents have purposely and maliciously within the intent of creating communal disharmony and caste-based clashes have shown two communities in a bad light”.

According to another Indian publication, the team behind Patal Lok has been served with a legal notice by a member of the Lawyers Guild, Viren Sri Gurung.

As being reported, in his legal notice, Gurung mentioned the word which is seemingly insulting towards the Nepali community.

“There is a clip wherein during an interrogation a lady police officer uses a casteist slur on a Nepali character. There wouldn’t have been any problem had only ‘Nepali’ been used. But the word that follows it is unacceptable. Since Anushka Sharma is one of the producers of the show, we have served her a notice”, quotes The Quint Gurung as saying.

Earlier on May 18, an online petition was initiated by the community addressed to the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry, Minister Prakash Javadekar, Amazon Prime Video, and series producer Anushka Sharma.

The petition states that the slur used in the web series portrays Gorkha women in a poor light.

According to the Indian media, the Gorkha community has taken strong objection to the casteist slur in the web series, demanding that the word be dropped from the show.
