A Muslim teen and his father’s reply to the religious extremism that she had been facing is plastered all over the internet. The 17-year-old Lamyaa from Pennsylvania has published her text messages, which she received in reply from his father after she told him that she wanted to stop wearing her headscarf.
What actually happened was that Lamyaa was discussing about President Donald Trump’s policies criticizing Muslims in a group chat when someone told her that she couldn’t remove her hijab and said; “Stop defending Islam b***h shut up you couldn’t take that scarf off or your dad would beat your a**.”
Lamyaa, who was stern of her religious values, did not plan to stop wearing hijab, but still texted her father in Saudi Arabia telling him that she was considering to stop it. The purpose behind texting him was to see what his reaction would be.
Here is the screenshot of his father’s response:
The father at first responded in Arabic and asked if everything was OK, and later went on to tell her that wearing hijab is her’s decision to take and he would support her no matter what.
The teenager posted the screenshot of her text messages with father on Twitter, with the caption: “Since this is a mentality a lot of you seem to have”.
It has now been liked more than 300,000 times and retweeted almost 150,000 times.
Most of the people supported the girl and her father by pointing out that instead of being oppressive, which is the most popular image of Muslim fathers, he showed concern for his daughter and asked if everything was fine with her.
While this father-daughter exchange has opened new chapter in Muslim girls’ liberation, some have criticized that it is overlooking the plight of women who are being suppressed and oppressed. On which, she gave a complete explanation on Twitter as:
More power to you girl. Finally, no matter how many chapters it open, someone has taken a stand against the bullies who are oppressing Muslim girls in America.
