Pictures of the Verna actress smoking with the Bollywood actor were a reason to receive a great backlash from people. People commented on her choice of outfit and the fact that she was smoking in public.
Mahira tried to keep a low-profile for some time and did not talk about it. According to reports, Mahira found the opportunity to speak on the controversy in an interview while promoting her upcoming film, Verna. She said that she’s a very strong woman but when all of this happened, she was completely “shattered and broken”. She would think about posting a statement every day but would stop herself because she just wouldn’t know what to say.
She thought that ‘Power Di Game’ (a song from Verna) was the perfect reply to trolls, so she just posted the song as sort of a response to the trolls. She also said that she understands where all the criticism came from and that it didn’t come from a place of hate, acknowledging not the trolls, but those who were genuinely disappointed to see those pictures.
She further added that, “It’s the same disappointment that my nani or my mamoo would have felt seeing that So even now when I meet an older lady who says that she didn’t like the pictures, I’m quick to apologize,” she said.
Mahira stated that while she is a role model for her fans, she wasn’t perfect either; as any human, she makes mistakes. She believes the narrative in Pakistan is changing and she is happy to be part of it.
