Contact lenses are very safe. Still, wearing contact lenses can damage your eyes if you wear them too long, fail to clean them properly or do not replace them as directed by your eye doctor.
Contact lenses are considered medical devices and are regulated by the doctor. Recently a British man was forced to have his eye removed after a infection.
Andrew Carthew, 59, wore prescription contact lenses for years and said he was always careful not to sleep or shower or swim with them in. One morning he woke up with a weepy eye. At first he thought it was conjunctivitis, a common, treatable eye infection but he ended up in the emergency room. Antibiotics did not help, the infection was so severe they finally had no choice but to remove his eye.
The reason for sharing this story is contact lenses also increase the risk of eye damage because of bacteria and other infections if you don’t use them properly.
