Justin Bieber mocks Shawn Mendes’ ‘prince of pop’ status

Singer Justin Bieber took a dig at his fellow Canadian singer Shawn Mendes after the Treat You Better hitmaker posted a magazine cover that had prince of pop written on it. Mendes has been named prince of pop by the Guardian’s Observer magazine. Bieber soon mocked Mendes in a comment on the Instagram post, reports mirror.co.uk.

The Canadian pop stars started a mock war over Instagram on Sunday after Mendes, 20, posted the cover for UK newspaper The Guardian’s weekly mag, The Observer, on which he’s dubbed the “Prince of Pop.”

Bieber, 25, was quick to call out the “Lost in Japan” singer. “Hmm … Gonna have to break a few more records to dethrone my title there bud (Canadian voice),” Bieber commented (via Comments by Celebs). “But if you want we can play hockey for it but i heard your [sic] a real bender on the ice we could just drop the buckets and tilt for it.”

Mendes was quick to rise to the challenge, replying “LOL any time any day you just let me know!!!”

This is not the first time Mendes and Bieber have been in competition with one another. In fall 2017, Mendes was linked to Bieber’s wife, Hailey Baldwin. The pair sparked relationship rumors when they attended the Met Gala together last May, but the 22-year-old model reconnected with Bieber that June before getting engaged a month later. Mendes was a good sport about it, though, and even texted congratulations.

But social media users apparently took this most recent exchange a little too seriously, forcing Bieber to clarify that it was all just a “playful joke” and people needed to “relax.”
