Filmmaker Jamshed Mehmood aka Jami’s film Moor has proved to be a source of pride for the country. Not only is it being lauded at various film festivals world over but it is also Pakistan’s official entry for the upcoming Academy Awards.
Recently in an interview Jamshed aka Jami refuses to support the trend of following Bollywood when it comes to film making.
Expressing his views on contemporary cinema he said, “I am against the item number culture in films, it’s a blasphemy to the profession. I don’t understand the difference between a film director who convinces a girl to dance as ‘item number’ in a film for the big screen and a pimp who convinces a girl to dance in the red light area, what’s the difference? Only difference I see is poor lighting and arrangement.”
He further said, “My main issue is that no one has a problem with “item number” culture. They’re one of the reasons misogyny has increased in conservative countries like India.”
I believe what is required now is that we change our own outlook towards these songs which are nothing but a source of entertainment, and cannot be certified as ‘provocative and suggestive’. Else, their acceptance in the society should be condemned.
