During a ceremony on the Lido, Jury President Lucretia Martel announced the prestigious Gold Lion Award to Todd Phillips for the dark comic book blockbuster film “Joker”.
It all happened on Saturday, at the 76th Venice International Film Festival 2019.
On the ceremony, Phillip thanked everyone saying, “I want to thank Warner Bros. and DC for stepping out of their comfort zone and taking such a bold swing on me and this movie.”
He had Joaquin Phoenix by his side on stage, to whom he dedicated much of his acceptance speech adding, “There is no movie without Joaquin Phoenix. Joaquin is the fiercest and brightest and most open-minded lion I know. Thank you for trusting me with your insane talents.”

Unfortunately, Phoenix did not win the best actor award this time and it went to Italian actor Luca Marinelli for the Jack London adaption “Martin Eden”.
However, Phillip’s dedication of speech to Phoenix was appreciated with a great round of applause. We just can’t wait to watch the film which is expected to hit theatres on October 4.
