Former Indian Singer ‘Abhijeet’ Arrested For Harassing A Female Journalist

Mumbai Police had arrested the former Bollywood singer Abhijeet for harassing a female journalist on social media.

Indian Express reported that the Mumbai Police confirmed the singer was arrested last month after a complaint against him for harassing a female journalist on Twitter.

According to sources, Abhijeet’s phone was taken away after his arrest. While in custody, the Abhijeet had signed the surety for bail as his acts were deemed a bailable offence.

Abhijeet was also made to delete his controversial tweets. Mumbai Police even contacted Twitter India to explore the possibility of having his account banned.

Reacting to the development, Preeti said, “When Abhijeet had tweeted filth about Swati Chaturvedi I had tweeted the complaint to CP Mumbai. In response Abhijeet started abusing me. I spoke to CP padsalgikar who sent me to the Cyber Cell where my FIR was registered. I am really glad that they called him for questioning and arrested him on 26 July. It vindicates my complaint. He was later released on bail provided by his son. Shame on a father who has to be bailed out by his son, for abusing women! The police also confiscated his phone and have sent it to forensics. They also instructed twitter to either get offensive tweets deleted or banned his handle.

“Abhijeet later deleted all of his tweets. This is a big victory against online abuse. I advise all women to fight such abusers systematically. The charge sheet will be filed soon and I will continue this fight in court, till he gets punished for his creepy, cheap and criminally abusive behaviour.” Journalist Swati Chaturvedi, who was Abhijeet’s first victim of social media abuse, praised Mumbai Police while giving this statement.

She said, “I had sent seven letters to Delhi Police and even recorded my statement, but the cops in the national capital turned out to be disaster. Despite my repeated pleas, they were reluctant to register and transfer the FIR to Mumbai. This new development would encourage many women on social media in future to seek police’s intervention if they ever find themselves as victims of online abuse.”

Editor-in-chief, Rifat Jawaid, who was also threatened and abused by Abhijeet on a news channel during a live debate show;

He said, “I was a bit sceptical of Mumbai Police given that they reported to the state’s BJP government. But their action must be lauded as this will deter many lunatics such as Abhijeet from subjecting women to sexual harassment on social media in future.

“This gives us confidence to carry on with the campaign against those who indulge in crimes against women as jantakareporter.com takes a dim view of such acts. We are very serious about any crimes committed against women and will continue with our resolve even in future.”

Abhijeet has been targetting women and other social media users, who objected to his tweets wrongly blaming a Muslim for the murder of the Infosys techie, Swathi, in Chennai. The prime suspect arrested by the Chennai Police was identified as one Ramkumar.
