Film based on best-selling novel by Angie Thomas, “The Hate U Give”, takes on racism and police brutality!

Film based on the adaptation of Angie Thomas best selling novel, “The Hate U Give”, was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, casting spotlight on racism and police brutality.

This film was much applauded by critics and audiences at the screening at the festival. The festival’s youth committee that chose to screen the movie, said, “a timely commentary in the Black Lives Matter era”.

Film is set to release in theaters on 19th October. It will be sharing  the release date with Mowgli, Andy Serkis’ take on The Jungle Book as well as the revival of the horror franchise Halloween.

The story plot follows Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg) who is living between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school which she attends. As there exist the uneasy balance between these two worlds.

Starr is devastated, when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. After this, she faces pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what is right.
Considering the ground realities and social climate, The Hate U Give, has the much appropriate time for its making. The other star cast of the film include Russell Hornsby, Regina Hall, Common, Anthony Mackie, Issa Rae, KJ Apa, Lamar Johnson and Algee Smith. The adapted script is written by Audrey Wells and directed by George Tillman Jr.
