Emma Watson as Cinderella would have been a delight to see. However, the actress couldn’t imagine herself as the sleek, damsel-in-distress kind of Disney Princess. This is why she negated the role of Cinderella.
While, we all can imagine that there can be no one better than Emma to play Belle, she was first given the chance to play Cinderella in Kenneth Branagh’s remake. However, the Harry Potter actress rejected this role because she believed that the particular princess wasn’t enough to be considered as a role model.
“But when they offered me Belle, I just felt the character resonated with me so much more than Cinderella did. She remains curious, compassionate and open-minded. And that’s the kind of woman I would want to embody as a role model, given the choice,” Emma told Entertainment Weekly.
“In a strange way, she challenges the status quo of the place she lives in, and I found that really inspiring.”
Belle cum Ms. Watson has also affirmed that the story has been changed to make it more Belle-centric. It has been tweaked in a way that the princess has been portrayed as the inventor instead of her father:
“I was like, ‘Well, there was never very much information or detail at the beginning of the story as to why Belle didn’t fit in, other than she liked books.”
“Also, what is she doing with her time?’ So we created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented a kind of washing machine, so that, instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead. So, yeah, we made Belle an inventor.”
