Does drinking hot drinks on a scorching summer’s day really cool you down?

You’re hot, sweaty, and looking for something to quench your thirst. Anything in liquid form will do, but have you popped the kettle on?

Yes, a hot drink can cool you down, but only in specific circumstances. If you drink a hot drink, it does result in a lower amount of heat stored inside your body, provided the additional sweat that’s produced when you drink the hot drink can evaporate.

The hot drink is hotter than your body temperature, so you are adding heat to the body, so instead of reaching for an ice-cold soft drink or artificially sweetened juices when you’re feeling hot and bothered, go for a good cup of hot tea, because it doesn’t have other effects.

And above all, keep hydrated, because drinking “will give you the material with which you can produce sweat, thereby reducing your own temperature.
