Dragon’s Shield: China and Pakistan’s Strengthened Partnership

The alliance between China and Pakistan has become one of the most strategically important relationships in the area, given the fast changing geopolitical landscape of the 21st century. The recent visit of Prime Minister ShehbazSharif to China emphasizes the importance of this crucial partnership, emphasizing the revival of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the development of collaboration in other areas. This visit not only holds the potential for substantial advantages for Pakistan but also demonstrates the increasing importance of Pakistan to China. The geopolitical positioning of Pakistan at the intersection of South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East makes it an essential partner for China. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which is a key project of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), represents the significant strategic value of this initiative. The purpose of Prime Minister Sharif’s visit is to revitalize CPEC, which will enable China to have direct entry to the Arabian Sea through the Gwadar Port. This port provides a crucial alternative to the vulnerable Strait of Malacca, which currently serves as a major route for China’s oil imports.

Revitalizing CPEC entails more than just decreasing transportation expenses; it involves strengthening China’s strategic adaptability in response to any naval blockades. Once the Gwadar Port is fully functional, China will be able to safeguard its energy resources and maintain a continuous flow of trade, thereby reducing the potential hazards associated with regional conflicts or disputes over marine borders.

Prime Minister Sharif’s visit has focused on the importance of developing economic cooperation, a goal that is in line with China’s need to maintain its economic growth. Pakistan’s emerging economy creates a growing market for Chinese goods, services, and investments. China has made significant investments in multiple industries in Pakistan, including infrastructure, energy, telecommunications, and manufacturing. These investments are a component of China’s overall plan to maintain its economic expansion by expanding into new markets and promoting economic interdependence. Furthermore, Pakistan’s young and growing population presents a substantial market for Chinese goods. China’s shift from an economy reliant on exports to one driven by domestic consumption and foreign investments can be facilitated by Pakistan, which offers a promising opportunity for economic progress.

China considers its strategic alliance with Pakistan to be of utmost importance in its regional security strategy. China considers Pakistan to be a crucial counterbalance due to India’s expanding military capabilities and its growing alignment with Western countries, especially the United States. Enhancing Pakistan’s military capabilities, such as deploying modern fighter jets and defense technology, enables China to uphold a strategic equilibrium in South Asia.

Pakistan has continuously aligned itself with China’s stances on crucial matters, ranging from territorial conflicts to human rights, in international forums. The constant backing is of great value to China as it navigates through intricate global politics. Facing growing scrutiny and criticism from Western nations, China’s diplomatic position is strengthened and a key alternative viewpoint is provided by its loyal ally, Pakistan.

Pakistan also receives advantages from China’s assistance on various global matters, ensuring that the diplomatic alliance is not unilaterally beneficial. Nevertheless, China relies on this partnership to establish a crucial level of diplomatic reliability, preventing it from remaining isolated on the international platform.

Although Pakistan undeniably gains advantages from this association, the geopolitical motivations behind China’s reliance on Pakistan are now more prominent than ever. The resurgence of CPEC and greater cooperation across multiple domains hold the potential for reciprocal advantages, but also highlighting China’s dependence on Pakistan to accomplish its wider regional and global goals. The partnership between China and Pakistan, formed based on shared interests and strategic needs highlights the increasing importance of Pakistan to China in the current geopolitical landscape.
