We’re so used to stainless steel, white, or black-colored appliances that it seems like those are our only options when it comes to the kitchen. Smeg appliances, however, are making cooking more colorful thanks to their recent collaboration with Dolce & Gabbana. The famous fashion brand has created a line called ‘Sicily Is My Love’ that includes ranges, refrigerators, and various small appliances clad in gorgeous Mediterranean motifs (like golden lemons and purple figs) as well as imagery referencing Sicilian traditions like puppet theater.
The appliances are inspired by a 1950’s aesthetic—one that has proved timeless—which is most evident in the icebox style of the fridge and the bulbous silhouette of the toaster. Their surface decoration is akin to Italy’s vintage ceramic paintings of geometric and floral patterns; divorced of their original context, however, they bring a fresh perspective to the things we use every day.
Outfitting your kitchen with these colorful appliances, however, will cost you a pretty penny. The smaller devices—toaster, kettle, juicer, coffee maker, and hand blender—all start at $600. The fridges, which come in a variety of illustrated motifs, are a bigger investment at $50,000 each.
