Democrats formally nominated Senator Kamala Harris for the vice presidency. The United States shows that there is no discrimination in the diversity of race and gender. They believe this will energize their coalition to defeat President Trump.
Speeches by Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Warren and Nancy Pelosi were intended to highlight Harris’ uniquely American biography. Kamal is one of the few women of colour elected to US senate who has been an immigrant and a graduate of Howard University, a historically Black University.
“We’re at an inflection point,” Harris said as she formally accepted the nomination. “The constant chaos leaves us adrift. Incompetence makes us feel afraid. Callousness makes us feel alone”.
“We can do better and deserve so much more. We must elect a president who will bring something different, something better and do the important work.”
The third night of the Democratic National Convention was conducted virtually because of Corona Virus pandemic talked about women, minorities and young voter. While Harris was the evening’s main attraction, the program featured remarks from several of the most powerful women in the party, as well as Spanish-language speakers, victims of gun violence and everyday Americans meant to represent marginalized slices of the electorate. Like the previous evenings, the night combined elements of an old-fashioned variety show, a telethon and a political event.
However, Obama’s message reflected of a country who changed by crisis and a party which was desperate to drive out an incumbent president. He also warned about the durability of American democracy
“This president and those in power — those who benefit from keeping things the way they are — they are counting on your cynicism,” Obama addressed the voters. “They know they can’t win you over with their policies. So they’re hoping to make it as hard as possible for you to vote, and to convince you that your vote doesn’t matter. That’s how they win.”
For around 3.5 years Obama has stayed out of politics and rather occasionally offered advice and endorsement to Democratic candidates. Many voter wished he would speak up since Trump has gone after him continuously with fierce attacks and false accusations. Many supporters wished he would speak out against him and he finally did, focusing on the Republican’s approach to the leadership, democracy and pandemic
“Do not let them take away your power,” Obama said. “Do not let them take away your democracy.”
A day after nominating Biden of Washington establishment politics who served as Obama’s vice president, Democrats tried to make the case that while Biden would be one kind of change agent. Kemala Harris would help steer the party in new directions and reflect a changing America.
