Call of Duty has been one the most successful video-game franchises since its launch in 2003, so it is no surprise that a movie adaptation is something that would be discussed.
Stacey Sher and Nick Van Dyk hope to succeed where almost everyone else has failed by turning games into commercially and critically successful film or TV.
According to Sher and Nick, Call of Duty film project has already been started, with multiple scripts, involving military experts and soldiers along with a detailed research going on. They are mapping out a Call of Duty universe, which will draw the feel of the different incarnations of the game rather than shifting existing plots.
It has been further said that the shoot of the film will began in early 2018, and if all goes well then there will be more to follow.
“We have plotted out many years,” says Sher, adding, “We put together this group of writers to talk about where we were going. There will be afilm that feels more like Black Ops, the story behind the movie. The Modern Warfare series looks at what it’s like to fight a war with the eyes of the world on you. And then maybe something that is more of a hybrid where you are looking at private, covert operations, while a public operation is going on.”
Van Dyk adds, “It’s going to have the same sort-of high-adrenaline, high-energy aesthetic as the game, but it’s not a literal adaptation. It’s much more broad and inclusive, global in scope… a big, tent-pole Marvel-esque movie.”
The plots of the movies will be inspired from existing game plots and not entirely based on them.
The main concern every Call of Duty fan will have is if the movie will do justice to the game. Apparently, so far, no movie based on a video game has ever been successful. From the unspeakable Super Mario Bros, the old Mortal Kombat to the recent Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed, video game movies have become a taboo of sorts for gamers.
Let’s see if game turned movie Call of Duty will break the spell or not! Till then, stay tuned for more updates.
