Faryal Makhdoom’s parents have revealed that they are terrified their son-in-law, boxer Amir Khan will divorce their daughter due to her ongoing dispute with his parents.
The tension between Faryal and her in-laws became public after she shared a surprising Snapchat rage earlier this month, accusing them of bullying her and trying to destroy her marriage.
Now her parents have broken their silence, admitting that they have experienced sleepless nights over the feud as they worry their daughter will be cast aside.
“We have hearts, hearts that are broken when we hear such things. We are living in fear that at any moment our daughter will get divorced,” stated Mrs Makhdoom.
The breakdown of a marriage is still considered a taboo in most Muslim communities.
Amir’s parents criticized her for adopting a dress code which is not acceptable in the Islamic faith.
She also said they considered her a ‘bad Muslim’ for baring skin and claimed that she was even cropped out of family photographs. But Mrs Makhdoom defended her daughter saying, “Faryal was only trying to adjust to western life. I got her married in London and at a very young age because I wanted her to have her home, and they should accept her as well. Yes, I admit our lifestyle may have been different, very different, but she did try adjusting. For three and a half years she adjusted.”
In an emotionally charged plea, Mrs Makhdoom insists that Khan’s parents should accept their daughter-in-law. “Please accept the girl as your own daughter. And please don’t say such a word to any girl, to anyone’s daughter. We are parents too. We are living in fear that at any moment our daughter will get divorced.”
