The Science of Laughter

Picture this: a man strolls down the bustling street, lost in thought, seemingly oblivious to the world around him. And then, it happens – he tumbles headfirst into an open manhole. It’s an undeniably comical sight, but have you ever wondered why we can’t help but find such mishaps amusing?

The answer may lie in our shared human experiences. Watching someone stumble or fall harks back to our own youthful and uncomplicated days when such tumbles were everyday occurrences, hardly worth fretting over. We’d dust ourselves off and carry on without a second thought. It’s nostalgia for simpler times.

Science offers another insight into our laughter at the misfortunes of others. Research suggests that laughter plays a vital role in upholding societal norms. We chuckle at careless or eccentric behavior as a way of reinforcing the expectations of the world we inhabit. After all, no one relishes being the subject of laughter. Laughter encourages us to conform, to be “normal.”

A recent viral video featuring Alize Shah’s onstage tumble during a catwalk left the internet in stitches, awash with memes and laughing emojis. Yet, it’s essential to reflect on our collective response. While laughter is natural, empathy is equally vital. As a society, and as humans, we can strive for a balance between a hearty laugh and a helping hand when someone stumbles on life’s catwalk.
