The reality of emotionally abusive relationships – Part I

‘Why don’t you forget him and move on?’ A phrase said one too many times to a woman who at some point in their lives have been involved in an emotionally draining relationship. Twisted within those disarmed by the words and manipulative minds, it is a battle to muster up the courage to leave because all the wasted words, constant seeking for validation and inevitable emotions seem to have a strong influence on our choices. Whereas, on the other hand, the trauma, mind games, disregard and narcissist behaviour shatters one’s self esteem and makes them vulnerable to the situation, enabling them to seek shelter within their abusers cage.

The toxic source tries to control you, never take responsibility for their actions, play the blame game, disregarding every boundary along the way. Intimidation, threats as well as criticism towards their partners choices or opinions is a trait they possess. You feel like you cannot escape this madness as you want to prove you are competent.

You try and try, more tears are shed, more hatred is exchanged. Days go by without you hearing their voice and it seems to get bearable. The numbness seems to slowly settle in your bones, one day you feel powerless while others make you feel liberated.

As time passes, you seem to be doing fine. You start humming again to the songs that once made you cry. The twinkle in your eyes seem to be returning, you know you deserve better. Better than this. He is out there having the time of his life while you sit there wondering what went wrong.

The clash between your mind and soul sends you in a whirlwind of emotions and all you can do is hope for a better tomorrow.
