Face shape is the key to to the perfect haircut

When it comes to hairstyles and haircuts, there are tons of cuts and styles that you can go for. long, medium, short types of hairstyles are just the tip of the iceberg. Men’s grooming has evolved and now the focus is on every minute detail. Before identifying your new look, there are several things you need to look into. for example length, maintenance hair type and the weather conditions in your region. These factors play an important role in ensuring your hairstyle is exactly the way you wanted it to be.

Most of us are aware of these factors by now, yet our haircuts do not turn out to be the way we imagined in our heads. The only reason for this is that you have never considered the fact that your face shape plays an integral role when it comes to haircuts. Identifying your face shape can immediately help you identify the correct haircut for you.

This is no rocket science, to be honest, there are few types of face shapes so it is easy to identify your face shapes. Here are few face shapes and how you will identify yours so that you can pick out the different hairstyles that suit you and your personality accordingly.

Oval face

An oval may not be the most alpha of face shapes for men, but it’s a good canvas for experimentation. Symmetrical and well-proportioned, an oval face shape does pretty much any hairstyle justice, so—you lucky boy—the choice is very much yours.

That said, there are a couple of minor caveats to ensure you optimise your ovalness. The trick with an oval face shape is to wear your hair off the forehead to create some volume and angles on top. The most suitable style is a classic short back and sides and slightly longer on the top, with a side-swept parting. You’ll also want to avoid a forward fringe. Too much heaviness on the forehead softens features and increases the roundness of the face. Feel free to ditch the beard. You don’t need facial hair to fill out any disproportionate gaps, in this case, so feel free to go clean-shaven.

Square face

Considered the masculine ideal, a square face shape is characterised by a razor-sharp jawline, even proportions and an overall chiselled appearance.

Like the oval, it’s a great foundation for most styles and is versatile enough to work with both extremely short and longer hairstyles—from buzz cuts to French crops to quiffs. Just bear in mind that the shorter you go, the more you look like you’ve just been conscripted. Not that that won’t serve you well.

Rectangular face

The longest face shape, the rectangular face is between oval and square, but the hairstyle needs to be adjusted to ensure that the face does not appear longer.

Because the rectangular face looks longer, it’s important to keep the top length and avoid the sides too short, as this only accentuates the length of the face. Try a well-proportioned style, don’t make the sides too short or leave too much length. Following this advice, try a hairstyle that puts the hair sideways and/or across the forehead to increase the width and ensure that your face does not look narrower than it actually is.
