Over 700,000 (and counting) Game of Thrones fans have signed a Change.org petition that demands for Season 8 to be remade “with competent writers.”
The petition, which was started by a Dylan D, says: “David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on. This series deserves a final season that makes sense. Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!”
Many of the show’s episodes have sparked online backlash, from the accidental cameo of a Starbucks cup in episode 3 to more serious fare like criticism of the use of rape as a plot device to strengthen Sansa Stark’s character.
Petitioners have cited numerous other reasons for signing: rushed, predictable writing, plot holes and “blatant lack of care for any kind of character integrity or emotional journey”.
It’s unlikely that the petition will be heeded by HBO and a remake is a budget and logistical impossibility. But this is how the fans are reacting after seeing the second last episode.
