7 Side Effects of Skipping Breakfast

Surely, we have heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But in our attempts to lose those extra pounds to reach our goal weight, breakfast is often the meal we choose to skip. Although this habit may yield results, the illusion of a healthy body will be a short-lived one.

Some people merely claim that they don’t feel hungry that early in the morning, whereas some hold themselves back and starve themselves in the morning time, and quite frankly, that’s sounds like torture!

Here are some of the side-effects of skipping breakfast:

Heart Problems

Based on studies, men who tend to skip breakfast have approximately 27% more chances of getting struck with a heart attack compared to those who don’t skip.

People who choose to skip breakfast are also known to suffer from hypertension, which in turn, leads to clogged arteries.

As a result of this, they put their body at risk of developing chronic cardiovascular conditions.

Higher Risk of Developing Type-2 Diabetes

In a study that aimed at seeking a link between eating habits and health, from a sample of 46,289 women, it was determined that women who had a habit of dodging breakfast were more susceptible to developing Type-2 diabetes, than women who didn’t skip breakfast.

Even worse, working women who avoided their breakfast had 54% more chances of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Higher Chances of Weight Gain

If you are trying to lose weight by skipping breakfast, you might want to rethink that strategy now. According to a study, people who skip the morning meal had higher chances of gaining weight.

Skipping breakfast drives up the craving for sugar and fatty foods. Besides, since your hunger pangs are pretty intense, you end up gobbling down whatever edibles you lay eyes on during the day. There goes your diet plan!

Lower Energy Levels & Negative Impact on Mood

While performing an experiment, one group was given a healthy breakfast, the second group was given only coffee, and the third had no breakfast. The groups were then observed for 2 hours.

Negatively Affects Cognitive Function

A hearty breakfast allows better cognitive functioning throughout the day. A study conducted on a sample of teenagers ranging from the ages of 12 to 15 in two trials revealed the group that the group that was allowed to have breakfast showcased better precision in a visual search test, while the group that was not given breakfast hampered the results.

Likely to Cause Migraines

Hypoglycemia is a medical term used for low blood sugar levels. Skipping meals trigger a massive dip in sugar levels, in turn, triggering the release of hormones that compensate for them.

This however, increases the blood pressure, triggering migraines and headaches.

The occurrence is higher when you avoid breakfast, as it is the first meal of the day consumed after nearly a 12-hour gap.

So, if you want to keep those migraines away, remember not to skip breakfast.
